West Virginia Independent Colleges and Universities, Inc. $375.9 Million Impact on the State


West Virginia Independent Colleges and Universities (WVICU) was founded in 1951 by a group of concerned leaders from business and industry to promote the work of the independent colleges in the state.  West Virginia Independent Colleges and Universities represents the following non-profit member institutions:


Alderson Broaddus University in Philippi

Appalachian Bible College in Mount Hope

Bethany College in Bethany

Davis & Elkins College in Elkins

Ohio Valley University in Vienna

University of Charleston in Charleston

West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon

Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling


In academic year 2017-2018 the member institutions of WVICU enrolled a total of 8,547 students. Of those students 44% were from West Virginia. Our research estimates that the students spending associated with being on the eight campuses will be $25,429,762 and the amount visitors will spend will be $8,449,506.


The WVICU member institutions employ directly a total of 2,093 employees and create an additional indirect 2,759 jobs in their communities. Approximately $100,445,721 will be disbursed on compensation for the institutions’ employees and a total payroll of $221,990,035 will be created throughout the state as a result of indirect jobs created in their communities.  Approximately $73,119,641 will be spent on goods and services in their communities.
