
For 120 years, West Virginia Wesleyan has aspired to graduate broadly educated men and women, who think critically and creatively, communicate effectively, act responsibly, and demonstrate their local and world citizenship through service. Founded in 1890, Wesleyan is a private four-year co-educational college that is affiliated with The United Methodist Church. Small interactive classes and a dedicated and accessible faculty whose priorities are teaching and advising allow students to benefit from a highly personalized educational experience.
The curriculum foundation begins with a general studies liberal arts program where students complete one-third of their course of study. Wesleyan offers 43 undergraduate majors and 40 minors along with graduate programs in athletic training, business administration, education, and nursing. The Honors Program is offered to recognize and challenge the College's most academically-talented and motivated students. The most popular academic majors include athletic training and exercise science, biology, business, education, nursing, political science, and psychology.
All academic programs either require or strongly encourage the completion of an internship experience. Wesleyan's academic calendar is 4-4-1 includes an optional May Term that has recently offered study abroad courses in Eastern Europe, Greece and Turkey, Ireland, Italy, Russia, and South America. All entering freshmen enroll in topical first-year seminar courses. The Academic Services Office assists students with course scheduling, academic advising and internships, while the Career Services provides assistance with study abroad, resume writing, job searches, and graduate and professional school placement. The Learning Center provides tutoring services as well as comprehensive services for students with diagnosed Learning Disabilities. The College also offers a Writing Center and English as a Second Language courses.
The Wesleyan Experience places strong emphasis on information technology. As part of a partnership with the Dell University Program, all students are required to have a notebook computer throughout their undergraduate study. The high-technology campus fiber-optic system ensures everyone rapid internet and email access from all major campus buildings and every residence hall room.
Over 80 percent of Wesleyan's students live on-campus and the College guarantees on-campus housing for all undergraduate students. Housing options include double and single rooms, suites, and apartments. Campus dining is provided and prepared by Aladdin Food Services. Meals are served in the beautiful French A. See Dining Center. Other meal options also include the "Cat's Claw Restaurant" and carry-out lunches and snacks at "Sunny Bucks."
Wesleyan features 19 NCAA Division II sports including basketball, cross country, lacrosse, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track, and volleyball for women and baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, swimming, tennis, and track for men. The College is a member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. It boasts two members of the NFL Hall of Fame: Earl "Greasy" Neale and Clifford "Gip" Battles.
Wesleyan also features a number of musical groups and a theatre department that presents 4-5 productions per year in the new Virginia Thomas Law Center for Performing Arts. The College's Concentus Vocum, Concert Chorale, jazz ensemble, and percussion ensemble tour throughout the region.
Over 80 percent of Wesleyan's students participate in community service activities that include the Upshur County youth basketball program, Special Olympics, Ten Thousand Villages, Children's Festival, after-school tutoring and mentoring, and other social and international activities. Each spring, nearly 40 students participate in Alternative Spring Break trips. Recent trips have included hurricane relief efforts in New Orleans and along the Gulf coast, Habitat for Humanity projects in Georgia, and housing projects in Appalachia.
Wesleyan has a balanced and diverse student life program that includes over 70 campus organizations. Included among these are a campus radio station, newspaper, yearbook, literary magazine, student government, departmental clubs, Green Club, Students in Free Enterprise, WVWChange, fraternities and sororities, and religious organizations.
The College also offers a structured leadership program to interested students. Campus Activities Board organizes entertainment programs each weekend while the Arts Alive! series presents a wide range of cultural events throughout the year. The Wesleyan Outdoor Recreation (W.O.R.L.D.) takes advantage of the campus location to provide a wide range of weekend activities including biking, caving, hiking, horseback riding, snow skiing, and whitewater rafting.
While Wesleyan is affiliated with The United Methodist Church, students of all faiths are welcome. The College holds a weekly optional worship service every Tuesday morning and a Catholic mass each Saturday evening. Other religious groups include Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship, United Methodist Youth Movement, Kappa Phi, Sigma Theta Epsilon, Campus Crusade for Christ, and Religious Life Council.
Wesleyan enjoys outstanding placement rates in graduate and professional schools. In a recent alumni survey, 94% of respondents reported being in graduate school or employed within six months of graduation. The most recent National Survey of Student Engagement reported that Wesleyan offers a more challenging and collaborative learning experience in a more supportive environment than its peers. Eighty-eight percent of all respondents reported being satisfied with their Wesleyan experience.
The College consistently ranks among state leaders in graduation and retention rates, the academic profile of its entering students, and in alumni giving. Wesleyan is a Princeton Review "Best Southeastern College," the seventh consecutive year it has been honored by the organization. Wesleyan is also a member of Colleges of Distinction and is listed in the College Access and Opportunity Guide. West Virginia Wesleyan is more than a college.
