Located in the heart of the capital city, on the banks of the Kanawha River, the University of Charleston is an independent, comprehensive institution where demonstrating student learning is the central educational focus.
U.S.News & World Report has once again ranked UC first among all the baccalaureate colleges in West Virginia, and #15 in the South. The university has held this distinction for three out of the last four years. In addition, UC was one of only six schools nationwide added to the 2010 edition of the Princeton Review's The Best 371 Colleges, which features the country's finest institutions for undergraduate education.
The Charleston Area Alliance solicits nominations each year for its "Expect the Best" awards, which recognize local businesses and organizations that promote quality of life at home, at work and in the community. In 2008, the Alliance went beyond naming the "Expect the Best" winner by presenting a special honor, titled "Simply the Best," to UC for its "above and beyond" contributions to the community. Among the achievements noted were the "Learning Your Way" curriculum recognized in The New York Times Magazine, the opening of the UC School of Pharmacy, the new on-campus fitness center, and the new Graduate School of Business.
Experts in education like Peter Ewell, Vice President of the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems, and Richard Legon, President of the Association of Governing Boards of Universities, are lifting UC up as the example of what colleges should be doing to improve undergraduate outcomes in the 21st century. At the conclusion of a five-year, $1.75 million Title III grant for integrating technology into teaching, Ewell commended the UC Faculty Center for its exemplary performance, saying, "The curricular transformation at the University of Charleston is one of the most ambitious such efforts in the country. And it is unquestionably a success."
Also as a consequence of the faculty's work, President Edwin Welch was one of just 30 leaders from around the world invited to participate in a Fall 2009 conference in Istanbul, Turkey, on ways of improving quality in higher education. This international attention affirms UC's position as a leader in assessment of student learning and creation of an outcomes-focused curriculum.
President Welch celebrated 20 years of leadership at the University of Charleston in 2009. During his tenure, the University has become a leader in regional higher education. Enrollment has flourished. With a full-time enrollment of 1,385 in 2009, the University of Charleston has once again surpassed its highest number of students in over 30 years. This year's student body includes 106 international students from 22 countries, and students from 37 states. His vision led to the creation of two graduate schools: the UC School of Pharmacy and the UC Graduate School of Business. The University's first class of pharmacists and Master of Business Administration and Leadership professionals will graduate in May 2010.
UC athletes continued to be a force in the West Virginia Conference. Last year, the UC women's tennis team won both the WVIAC Conference regular season championship and tournament in a perfect 14-0 season. The Lady Eagles basketball team followed suit by winning both regular season and tournament championships, and advancing to the NCAA Division II round of 32. The Golden Eagles football team began the 2009 season with a seven-game winning streak - the longest since football was reinstated in 2003 - and were nationally ranked in Division II for the first time ever. Men's soccer also achieved national ranking for the first time.
A progressive, outcomes-based curriculum, strong commitment to the community, athletic excellence and student satisfaction all prove that the University of Charleston is undeniably On the Move!
