Executive Director
West Virginia Independent Colleges & Universities, Inc. seeks a part-time candidate to serve as chief executive officer of this 57 year old, well-regarded non-profit organization. The executive director reports directly to an eight-member Executive Committee and works closely with a 40-member board of directors. The organization is well-positioned in the state and nationally and has recently completed an in-depth strategic planning process. Serving the nine independent colleges and universities throughout the state with academic offerings in both liberal and professional arts, the consortium represents a strong partnership between business and industry and independent higher education. Located in Charleston, WV, the offices are centrally located and within an easy drive of the nation's capital and other historical attractions. A cooperative spirit exists among the members, their respective communities and the WVICU governing structure. In response to the changing nature of fundraising for private institutions, the organization is moving from a full-time to a part-time Executive Director.
The major responsibilities of the position are:
- fundraising primarily from foundations and corporations for the benefit of member institutions,
- legislative advocacy on financial aid and other issues related to higher education, and
- executive leadership in directing the work of the Board, organizing annual Board meetings, and coordinating communications to and among the presidents of member institutions.
Experience as an administrator is required with demonstrated success in organizational leadership, fundraising, and fiscal management. The successful candidate should possess and demonstrate superior communication and facilitation skills, and be self-motivated and self-directing. Knowledge of commitment to independent higher education is essential, and familiarity with West Virginia state government is desired.
A Bachelor's degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred. Staff support for this position includes a degreed Administrative Assistant and a limited budget for outside support staff as needed. Some travel throughout the state is necesary. The candidate should be available to begin work July 1, 2008.
